Looking After Your Home
Looking after your home helps keep it safe, clean, and in good condition. Following these simple steps can prevent damage and avoid repair charges.
Inside Your Home
Kitchen
Looking after your kitchen helps keep it clean, safe, and working well for everyday use.
- Keep your kitchen clean and give it regular care
- Be mindful of areas that can get hot or steamy, such as around kettles
- Wipe up spills on worktops and floors as soon as possible to help prevent stains
- Use a chopping board when preparing food to protect your worktops from scratches
- Run your washing machine on a 90°C service wash once a month to help keep it clean and fresh
- Use a small amount of bleach in your sink to help keep it smelling fresh and prevent blockages
- Avoid putting food, oils, or candle wax down the sink, as this can cause blockages and may result in repair charges
These small steps can help prevent damage, keep your kitchen in good condition and reduce repair recharges.
Bathroom
Keeping your bathroom clean and well looked after helps prevent mould, damage, and unwanted smells.
- Keep your bathroom clean and treat it with care
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners, as these can scratch the bath, sink, and toilet surfaces
- Take care when using descalers, as they may dull chrome or shiny finishes
- After showering, wipe down wall tiles with a dry cloth to help prevent mould forming on grout and seals
- Only flush toilet paper, as wipes can cause blockages and may lead to repair charges
These small steps can help keep your bathroom in good condition and avoid unnecessary issues or recharges
Outside Your Home
Garden and trees
Regular garden maintenance helps prevent problems and keeps your outdoor space safe and tidy.
- Keep your garden clean, tidy, and free from rubbish and weeds
- Mow your lawn regularly to keep it in good condition
- Make sure hedges are properly maintained so they don’t cause a nuisance or create safety concerns for others
- If work is needed to deal with an untidy or overgrown garden, or to resolve safety concerns, the cost of this work may be charged to you
- Trees, shrubs, bushes, or ivy should not be planted within 10 metres of a home if they are likely to grow taller than 3 metres
- You are responsible for maintaining any trees within your property boundary, unless stated otherwise in your agreement
Keeping on top of your garden like this helps prevent issues and helps make the community a pleasant place to live.
Fencing
Looking after your fence and keeping it in good condition helps keep your garden secure.
- Regularly paint or stain your fence using products specifically designed for fencing
- Keep vines, bushes, and plants trimmed back, as they can damage the fence as they grow
- Make sure sprinklers are not constantly spraying onto your fence
- Avoid having BBQs or bonfires close to your fence, and do not use it to launch fireworks, as timber fencing can burn
- Try to avoid balls being kicked against the fence, and make sure no one leans or climbs on it, as this can cause damage
Taking care of your fence will help it last longer and avoid unnecessary repairs.
